A newborn baby has died in Batumi, western Georgia, after suffering severe injuries inflicted by the mother, the statement from the Medina Clinic said on Friday.
The clinic said the child, born on 22 February at its facility, died on Friday morning despite “several days of intensive medical efforts” and the involvement of both in-house and invited multidisciplinary specialists.
Doctors carried out multiple emergency and highly specialised interventions, but the baby’s condition was described as extremely critical from the outset.
In its statement, the clinic expressed deep sorrow over the death and extended condolences to those affected, adding that patient safety and care remained its top priority throughout.
According to investigators, the mother - an employee of the clinic - gave birth in a bathroom at the facility. Authorities alleged she inflicted life-threatening injuries on the newborn shortly after birth.
Law enforcement officials have detained the woman, and an investigation is ongoing.
