The British Embassy in Tbilisi has responded to Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze’s demand that the UK apologise for what he called BBC’s “false reporting”, telling Radio Liberty that the broadcaster operates independently of the British government.

“The BBC is independent from the UK government in both its operational and editorial activity and this matter is for the corporation itself to decide,” the Embassy said.

Earlier this month the BBC released an investigative report alleging that during the 2024 protest dispersal, Georgian authorities used a chemical agent dating back to World War I.
