Nauru's decision 'major diplomatic victory' for Georgia, analyst

Georgian analyst Davit Chikhelidze has described Nauru's decision to end diplomatic relations with Georgia's Russian occupied Abkhazia region and withdraw its recognition of the territory as a major diplomatic victory for the Georgian government.

In a post on social media, Chikhelidze said the outcome was the result of years of consistent work by Georgia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the country's diplomatic corps, rather than a coincidence.

He praised the ministry and Foreign Minister Maka Botchorishvili, saying they had successfully concluded a process of national importance.

Chikhelidze also thanked ministry officials involved in the effort and criticised opposition politicians who had previously questioned the value of official visits to smaller countries.

"People mocked these visits, asking why officials were travelling to small countries and what such meetings could achieve. In reality, it is precisely this kind of steady, systematic diplomacy that delivers the results the whole country is seeing today," he wrote.

Chikhelidze argued that protecting Georgia's national interests remains the Georgian Dream government's central political objective and said Nauru's decision was further evidence of that policy.
