Russia’s war in Ukraine may “last for years” - German FM

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has stated in her recent interview that Russia’s war in Ukraine could "last for years".

Speaking with Bild am Sonntag last week,Baerbock said that “unfortunately, we have to assume that next summer, Ukraine will still need new heavy weapons from its friends”.

"We have to prepare for the fact that this war may last for years. Unfortunately, the Russian Government does not depart from the fixed idea of conquering Ukraine and its inhabitants," Baerbock said.

She stressed that Germany would ensure support for Ukraine “as long as it is necessary”.

"Ukraine protects our freedom and our peace. We are providing them with both financial and military support and will continue to do so for as long as necessary. Point!" - Baerbock said.

The FM also spoke about the Crimean peninsula and said that the international community would “never recognize its annexation”.

"Crimea belongs to Ukraine. The world will never recognize the 2014 annexation, which is against international law," she said.

The German official noted that the delusional ideas of Russian President Vladimir Putin to occupy Ukraine in the shortest possible time were not realized.

"The courage of Ukrainians and the international supply of weapons have led to the fact that Russian soldiers could not unpack their dress uniforms for victory. We will do everything to ensure that this never becomes a reality," she added.
Russia invaded Ukraine in February of this year.
