Democrat Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, has announced that she is resigning.
Her decision was due to the November 8 midterm elections, which resulted in the Republican majority in the lower house of Congress.
82-year-old Pelosi, who is one of the most influential Democrat politicians, will not continue to lead the party in the new session of the House of Representatives.
On November 17, Pelosi said it was time for a new generation to lead the Democratic Caucus.
“Scripture teaches us that, for everything, there is a season – and a time for every purpose under heaven.
As Speaker, it has been my privilege to play a part in forging extraordinary progress for the American people”, Pelosi tweeted.
Pelosi is the first woman in US history to become Speaker of the House of Representatives. She held this position for the first time in 2006, and for the second time after the 2018 elections.
