Father pledges renewed trials into his son’s case of death after ECHR ruling

Malkhaz Machalikashvili, father of Temirlan Machalikashvili, a 19-year-old killed in an anti-terrorist raid in 2017 in Georgia's Pankisi Gorge, on Thursday pledged to fight for renewed trials into the case after the ruling of the European Court of Human Rights during the day.

The court said there was “no sufficient evidence” to suggest responsibility of the Georgian state in the death of Machalikashvili, while  ECHR established no violation of Article 2 of the European Human Rights Convention concerning the substantive aspect of the right to life.

The court acknowledged the violation of a procedural aspect and ordered Georgian authorities to pay the applicants jointly €10,000 in non-pecuniary damage and €15,000 in costs and expenses.“For me, the main thing and the most important is that the European Court says there are too many violations in this case and it is not effectively investigated”, Machalikashvili said.

He is accusing the country’s state security service of “mistakenly” killing his son.
