Georgian prime minister Irakli Garibashvili on Tuesday said the explosion of Kakhovka dam in Ukraine by Russian troops was the result of the ongoing “devastating war” between Russia and Ukraine. 

"This is one of the results of this brutal, devastating war that Russia is waging in Ukraine. This is not new. Kakhovka HPP surprised you, but 20 percent of Ukraine's territory has been destroyed to date - cities, villages have been razed to the ground. Kakhovka HPP is one of them, and that is what we are talking about when we refer to the importance of peace every day”, Garibashvili said in his press comments. 

He stressed “there is no alternative to peace. We do not really see, and I do not think anyone does, any real efforts to end this war or calls for negotiations”. 

“On the contrary, we see more escalation, more aggression”, Garibashvili said. 

The dam blown up by the occupants early on Tuesday cannot be restored in its current form, the machine equipment is completely destroyed, the Ukraine hydro energy agency said. 

"As a result of the explosion from inside the engine, the HPP was completely destroyed. It is impossible to restore the station," the statement said.

The agency added the reservoir would be emptied in the next four days. 

Moscow has rejected its links with the explosion.
