Georgian PM, EU's Borrell discuss country's EU integration prospects in Brussels

Irakli Kobakhidze, the newly appointed Prime Minister, met Josep Borrell, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, on Tuesday in Brussels. The officials discussed Georgia’s prospects for it's EU integration path in the Brussels meeting and the situation in the Russian-occupied territories of Georgia.

Borrell congratulated Kobakhidze on his appointment as Prime Minister and wished him success in his future work, the government office said. Kobakhidze highlighted the significance of the EU candidacy, which Georgia obtained late last year. He noted the candidacy was the result of “intensive effort” and “steps taken by the government," further explaining  the Georgian government was "actively working" to move to the next stage of EU integration, which would be EU accession negotiations. Borrell and Kobakhidze discussed the situation in the occupied territories of Georgia and emphasized the need for Russia to fulfill the cease-fire agreement concluded on August 12, 2008, mediated by the EU. PM then thanked the EU for their "valuable involvement" in the process of supporting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia and the peaceful resolution of the conflict.

Kobakhidze mentioned the importance of Borrelli’s visit to Georgia last year and his "further support" in the process of joining the EU, the government administration noted.
