Sanctioning Ivanishvili, means sanctioning entire Georgian government - opposition MP

Opposition MP Iago Khvichia emphasized on Wednesday that sanctioning Bidzina Ivanishvili, the founder of the ruling Georgian Dream party and its honorary chair, would effectively amount to sanctioning the entire Georgian government, a scenario he sought to avoid.

Khvichia's remarks followed calls from opposition figures urging Western nations to impose sanctions on Ivanishvili, accusing him of meddling in the government's affairs to align with Russian interests.Expressing concern over the potential repercussions, Khvichia underscored his reluctance towards such measures, stating, "I don't want that." He clarified his stance, affirming that he had never advocated for sanctions against any individual in Georgia, including Ivanishvili.

Highlighting the significance of maintaining support from Western allies, Khvichia criticized the ruling party for endangering this crucial backing. He urged for unity in safeguarding Georgia's interests and stressed his commitment to averting condemnation of the entire government.
