26 EU states express concerns over Georgia's Transparency Bill, Says Jozwiak

Rikard Jozwiak, the Europe editor for RFE/RL in Prague, has commented on the ongoing debates in Brussels regarding the situation in Georgia. In a recent tweet, he noted that 26 EU member states have voiced their concerns over the ruling Georgian Dream party's foreign transparency bill.

Jozwiak hinted at the possibility of an imminent EU statement and potential updates from the European Commission regarding how the foreign agents law aligned with EU accession criteria.

Notably, Jozwiak pointed out Hungary's silence on the matter. Despite strong opposition from international partners, opposition lawmakers, politicians, and continuous large-scale public protests in central Tbilisi, the Georgian Dream party successfully passed the bill on May 1 in its second reading with 83 votes in favor and 23 against.

This bill, which faced rejection last year amidst widespread protests, has seen minimal alterations, primarily in its title. The term "agent" has been replaced by "Organization Pursuing the Interests of a Foreign Power" if they derive more than 20 percent of their incomes from abroad.
