PM: Georgia records milestone figures in tourism, aviation

Prime Minister of Georgia, Irakli Kobakhidze, on Monday claimed “record-breaking achievements” in tourism and aviation during a government meeting.

"Record revenues from tourism reached $808 million this quarter, exceeding pre-pandemic levels by 40 percent," he said. "This is a historic figure. We welcomed 1.3 million international travellers, an eight percent increase compared to last year. Additionally, we hosted 939,000 international tourists this quarter, setting another record."

Kobakhidze also shared “impressive statistics” from the aviation sector. "This summer season, we will see 13,600 flights, the highest number in history. In Europe alone, 11 airlines are operating flights to 38 destinations, a record achievement. This year, 50 airlines are operating in Georgia, compared to just 23 in 2011. Passenger traffic at our airports has surpassed 1.4 million, marking another historical maximum. We anticipate $4.5 billion in revenues from the tourism sector, a 9 percent increase over last year, and expect to host 7.9 million international travellers, another historic high."

Kobakhidze added the “positive trends” had enabled the government to increase the budget by 360 million GEL, focusing on healthcare, education, culture, defence, and regional development.

"As you know, we have seen high economic growth, with a nine percent growth rate recorded in the first four months. This allows us to increase the budget. This year, the budget increase of 360 million GEL will be allocated primarily to healthcare, education, defence, and regional development. Maintaining this economic growth rate is crucial as it directly impacts the budget," explained Kobakhidze.

The PM also announced salary increases for teachers. "The salary for 70 percent of teachers will be increased by at least 500 GEL, with certain categories seeing an increase of 800 GEL. Over the next four years, reforms in general and higher education will continue," he added.
