A large-scale drone attack targeted Moscow and the surrounding Moscow region overnight on September 20, triggering major fires at a logistics complex in Sofyino and an oil refinery in the Russian capital’s Kapotnya district.
The Moscow Oil Refinery, operated by Gazprom Neft, is one of Russia’s largest oil-processing facilities, with an annual refining capacity of approximately 11 million tonnes of crude oil.
The facility supplies around 40% of Moscow’s fuel market and accounts for approximately 70% of the Moscow region’s gasoline and aviation fuel requirements.
Residents of Moscow and the surrounding region reported multiple explosions throughout the night, with the refinery among several facilities reportedly targeted in the attack.
Moscow Region Governor Andrei Vorobyov said two people were killed and six others injured in the drone strikes.
A series of explosions was also reported in areas surrounding the Russian capital, with groups of drones approaching from several directions. A fire was reportedly detected at a warehouse complex in Sofyino.
Ukrainian drone manufacturer Fire Point claimed that its FP-1 long-range attack drones had destroyed a warehouse complex in the Moscow region.
The latest strikes came just two days after Russian authorities reported what they described as one of the largest Ukrainian drone attacks on Moscow, carried out overnight on September 18.
