Charles Michel, the president of the European Council, on Wednesday said his body was expected to make a decision on the start of the process of negotiations on the accession of Moldova, Ukraine and Georgia to the bloc by the end of 2023.

He said decisions would be made based on the European Commission reports and its recommendations issued to the Council.

“This will be a political decision based on the report that the European Commission will prepare. I sincerely hope that a positive decision will be possible by the end of the year,” said  Michel.

The European Commission said it would publish its interim reports on the countries in a few months, with recommendations on Georgia’s membership candidate status expected to come in October.

Georgia applied for EU membership in March 2022 and was granted European perspective in June.
