The European Union says that it is ready to accept applications from Georgia and Moldova on membership following Ukraine’s move to do so, Reuters has cited an EU official as saying.

The ruling Georgian Dream party said yesterday that it has plans to apply for the candidate status of the EU today.

Applying for EU membership does not mean that Georgia may become an EU member state in the short run as the country will have to meet a range of criteria for this.

Initially a special commission will be created to assess the current situation in the country and put forward recommendations to get the status of a candidate country.

If Georgia fulfills the recommendations, it will receive the status of the candidate country which will be followed by other recommendations for the final approval as a member.
