The European Parliament adopted a resolution on Wednesday emphasizing the EU’s role as Ukraine’s key strategic ally and calling for increased assistance and security guarantees to counter Russian aggression.
MEPs welcomed the proposal for a 30-day ceasefire, reached on March 11, and urged Russia to accept it by halting attacks on Ukrainian civilians, infrastructure, and territory. Given a shift in the US stance on the war, the EU and its member states are now Ukraine’s main strategic partners and largest donors. The resolution stresses the need to significantly increase military and financial support to uphold Ukraine’s right to self-defense.
The European Parliament emphasized that Ukraine must not be pressured into an unfavorable peace deal that could weaken its long-term security. MEPs also rejected any attempts to force Ukraine into surrendering for the sake of a rushed agreement. Additionally, they welcomed the formation of a “coalition of the willing” to enforce a potential Europe-led peace settlement.
The resolution reaffirmed that Ukraine belongs in the EU, calling for the acceleration of accession talks. MEPs also urged the EU to prepare funding for Ukraine’s post-war reconstruction while demanding that Russia be held financially accountable. Russian assets frozen under EU sanctions should be confiscated and used for Ukraine’s defense and rebuilding efforts.
Finally, the Parliament called for tougher sanctions against Russia and restrictive measures against entities aiding the Russian military with weapons or technology.
The resolution was passed with 442 votes in favor, 98 against, and 126 abstentions.
