The European Union member states have agreed to launch accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced on social media.
“Today the EU took a major step forward. All member states agreed to open the first accession negotiations cluster with Ukraine and Moldova,” von der Leyen wrote.
According to her, the first cluster of the accession process will be opened at the first intergovernmental conference scheduled for Monday. It will cover the core values and principles on which the EU is built, including the rule of law and strong democratic institutions.
She said the decision recognises the determination, courage and hard work both countries have shown in advancing reforms despite major challenges, adding that EU enlargement remains a strategic choice.
“By bringing our nations closer together, we strengthen peace, security and prosperity across our continent. In a world marked by growing uncertainty, a larger European Union is in our common interest. Enlargement remains one of the EU’s greatest success stories and our best investment in our shared future,” she said.
European Council President António Costa also confirmed the “green light” for the start of accession talks with Ukraine and Moldova.
European Parliament President Roberta Metsola said the step highlights both countries’ efforts and commitment to European values despite Russia’s aggression, threats, and intimidation.
