The European Parliament has adopted a new resolution on Georgia, continuing its refusal to legitimize the ruling Georgian Dream (GD) government and calling for the release of political prisoners, sanctions, and new parliamentary elections.

Out of 686 MEPs present during the vote, 490 voted in favor (71%), 147 opposed, and 49 abstained.

The resolution is based on the European Commission's 2023 and 2024 reports on Georgia, which consolidate widespread international criticism of the country's democratic backsliding in recent years. It is the first such report on Georgia within the EU enlargement framework since the country was granted candidate status.

While reaffirming that Georgia and its people deserve EU membership, the resolution delivers sharp criticism of the GD government’s actions.

Key provisions of the resolution include:

- Continued refusal to recognize the legitimacy of the Georgian Dream regime

- Condemnation of opposition leader arrests and calls for the release of political prisoners, including activist and media manager Mzia Amaglobeli

- A demand for the release of political detainees based on deteriorating health and lack of medical treatment

- A call for the EU to reassess its Association Agreement with Georgia

- A declaration that the 2025 local elections cannot be considered free and fair if leading opposition figures remain imprisoned.

Notably, a proposed amendment from the European Conservatives and Reformists group, which supported Georgian Dream and opposed Georgia’s EU membership, was rejected during the vote.

The resolution strengthens the European Parliament’s stance that Georgia’s future lies with Europe, but only if democratic principles and the rule of law are restored.
