International politics expert Batu Kutelia on Friday voiced concerns over the weakening of Georgia’s sovereignty amidst ongoing political challenges, sparked before the initiation and later the adoption of the country’s foreign influence bill, branded as a “Russian law” by domestic opponents and allies.

Speaking on the broader implications of recent legislative controversies, Kutelia stressed the vulnerability of the nation’s sovereignty and legitimacy to external influences.

“Diplomats should understand that this issue is not solely about the law; it is a matter of sovereignty,” Kutelia remarked. “When the legitimacy of the government weakens, it becomes susceptible to Russian and other authoritarian influences”.

Kutelia highlighted the critical role of diplomats and national leaders in safeguarding the country’s interests. “Those tasked with protecting national interests must recognize the gravity of the situation. Their stance is crucial in defending our sovereignty,” he asserted.

Despite the challenges, Kutelia expressed optimism about the country’s ability to navigate the crisis with international support. “I am confident that we will overcome this situation with the help of our partners,” he said, adding, “history will call everything by its own name.”
