The French Embassy in Georgia has issued a warning to its citizens about traveling to the country, citing increased risks of entry denial and heavy fines linked to participation in protests or online political activity.
According to a statement shared by the embassy on social media, which remains valid as of May 29, daily demonstrations have been ongoing in Tbilisi and other Georgian cities since November 28, 2024. These gatherings, often large in scale, have led to frequent police interventions, arrests, and dispersals, particularly around the Parliament building and central squares in the capital.
The embassy warned that taking part in such protests may result in steep penalties, including individual fines of 5,000 GEL (around €1,600), which can accumulate in the case of multiple violations. French nationals in Georgia are strongly advised to avoid public gatherings and ensure they carry valid identification at all times, as required by Georgian authorities during police checks.
Most notably, the embassy emphasized that Georgian border authorities have, in some cases, refused entry even to foreign nationals holding valid Georgian residence permits. Travelers are encouraged to assess the risks before departure, including their previous participation in protests or their activity on social media, which may be used as grounds for denying entry or imposing fines.
Poland also issued a similar travel notice, warning its citizens about potential restrictions and penalties when entering Georgia, particularly in connection with civic engagement or online expressions related to the current protests.
