French Member of the European Parliament Nathalie Loiseau has strongly criticized Georgia’s ruling party, Georgian Dream, accusing it of establishing a “Stalinist regime” in the country.
Her comments came in response to a statement by Transparency International (TI) – Georgia, which outlined the reasons it believes it has been targeted by Georgia’s Anti-Corruption Bureau under the recently enacted controversial law, widely referred to as the “Russian law.”
Loiseau shared the NGO’s post on social media platform X and referred to the ongoing pressure as repressive:
“So speaking at the European Parliament when your country is a candidate to access the EU would put you in trouble? The ‘Georgian Dream’ is turning Georgia into a Stalinist regime,” she wrote.
The controversy centers around enforcing a new grant transparency law, which, as NGOs say, opens the door to political repression. Several NGOs, including TI Georgia, stated on Wednesday that Georgia’s Anti-Corruption Bureau, led by Razhden Kuprashvili, has demanded from them disclosure of confidential data—including names, personal ID numbers, financial records, and even health information—about vulnerable individuals receiving legal and social support. The NGOs accuse the ruling Georgian Dream party of using Georgia’s judiciary to persecute civil society under the guise of transparency.
Kuprashvili, defended the bureau’s recent demands for documentation from several prominent NGOs, stating the requests are in full compliance with the law and aimed solely at investigating the transparency of grant-funded political activity.
