United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has congratulated Georgian President Mikheil Kavelashvili and the Georgian people on the occasion of Georgia’s Independence Day.

In his congratulatory message, Guterres said national holidays provided an opportunity to reflect on a country’s historical path, its contribution to the international community and its aspirations for the future.

The UN chief also stressed the importance of dialogue and solidarity in addressing global challenges.

Guterres said the world was facing serious challenges, including ending ongoing wars, preventing new conflicts, tackling the climate crisis, reducing inequality and ensuring the responsible management of advanced technologies.

According to the secretary-general, overcoming these challenges required renewed commitment to multilateral cooperation in support of peace, security, sustainable development and human rights.
