Former Prime Minister and recently resigned chairman of the ruling Georgian Dream party, Irakli Garibashvili, has dismissed speculation that he is planning a return to politics through an opposition platform.

In a press briefing, Garibashvili described the rumours as “deliberate disinformation” and “pure speculation” with no basis in fact.

“Who should I confront? I will tell you that nothing like this is being discussed,” he said. “This is absolutely pure speculation and deliberate disinformation spread by an individual, which has nothing to do with the truth.”

Garibashvili reiterated that he was stepping away from political life, stating his intention to transition into the private sector and contribute to Georgia’s economic development.

“As for my future activities, I don’t have a specific answer yet, but the public will understand – it will mainly be in the private sector,” he noted. “I will try to participate in the economic development of our country from this position, and you will have news about that later.”

Despite leaving the political stage, Garibashvili did not entirely close the door on a potential return in the future.

“Nothing is ruled out,” he said. “My main motivation is to leave politics and devote more time to my family. Life will show the rest.”

He emphasized his ongoing loyalty to Georgian Dream founder Bidzina Ivanishvili and described himself as a “soldier” of his political team.

“I am a supporter of Bidzina Ivanishvili and I am a loyal supporter of his team,” Garibashvili said. “Let’s not get carried away in advance. Let’s wait and get on with life. I wish everyone success.”

Addressing speculation that his resignation signaled plans to form an opposition movement, Garibashvili was unequivocal. “This is nonsense and a lie. Please, do not pay attention to this nonsense.”

He also clarified that he had no intention of leaving Georgia following his resignation.

“Of course, I am staying in Georgia. What do I want anywhere else?! God forbid that I think about living in another country,” he said. “This is our homeland, and we all need to think about strengthening and protecting our country from our own position.”

Asked whether it was now time for him to return home in light of the political climate, Garibashvili responded “I think the situation is calm. The weather is good, and why not?!”
