On this day, 14 years ago, a 21-member detachment of Georgian soldiers, inflicted a serious damage to Russian troops near the village, greatly outnumbering the Georgian side in a 45-minute battle.

Seventeen of the 21 Georgian soldiers were killed in the fight.

The Russia-Georgia war began on August 8, 2008 and lasted five days, claiming the lives of 228 Georgian civilians, 170 soldiers and 19 employees of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

The war displaced 192,000 people in Georgia, many of which were able to return to their homes. However, more than 20,000 people still remain displaced.
