Georgia records 816 cases of Omicron strain

Georgia has recorded 816 cases of a new strain of coronavirus dubbed as Omicron. 

The strain was confirmed in South Africa in November of 2021 and has spread rapidly across the world. 

The new variant is more contagious than the currently dominant Delta strain. However, doctors say that Omicron is less dangerous for lungs than the Delta variant. 

Georgia has reported 3,842 new cases of coronavirus and 31 deaths in the past 24 hours. 

The new cases for Tbilisi and regions are as follows: 
Tbilisi – 2,089 cases;
Adjara – 474;
Imereti – 437;
Kvemo Kartli – 108;
Shida Kartli – 157;
Guria – 141;
Samegrelo – Upper Svaneti – 179;
Kakheti-146;
Mtskheta-Mtianeti-52;
Samtskhe-Javakheti-48;
Racha-Lechkhumi and Kvemo Svaneti-11.
