Georgia will submit an application today to get the EU candidate status in an accelerated manner, head of the ruling Georgian Dream party Irakli Kobakhidze has stated.

“The opposition, which ironically assessed our ambitious action plan to apply for EU membership by 2024 and receive the EU candidate status, has today created an artificial agitation around this issue,” Kobakhidze said.

He stated that the opposition is trying to connect the issue with Georgia’s joining international sanctions against Russia and the country’s involvement in hostilities in Ukraine.

“I will repeat that Georgia’s involvement in the war in Ukraine in any form will bring devastating results for the country,” Kobakhidze said.

Ukraine was the first to apply for EU membership in an accelerated manner amid Russia’s invasion of the country.
