Bokeria claimed the incident had been misused by the UNM and its affiliates for political gain

Giga Bokeria, one of the leaders of Georgia’s Federalists party, on Friday issued an apology following a controversial social media post by fellow party leader and his wife Tamar Chergoleishvili. Chergoleishvili had earlier apologised herself for the post, which critics said included offensive language and targeted images of children.

In his comments, Bokeria, a former official under the United National Movement government, said he felt compelled to apologise as Chergoleishvili was a prominent leader within their political team. He added that the incident had been misused by the UNM and its affiliates for political gain.

“Federalists have always considered it essential to respond critically to actions that may harm protest movements,” Bokeria said. He emphasised the party’s commitment to cooperation with other political forces holding differing views and values.

The dispute arose after Chergoleishvili responded to Facebook comments she deemed insulting with harsh language and shared the profile photos of the commenters, some featuring minors.

The incident prompted criticism from other political figures, including UNM chair Tina Bokuchava, who called on the Federalists to be removed from the Octagon coalition – a group of eight parties opposing the 4 October local elections. Chergoleishvili defended her party’s continued participation in the coalition, noting that the Octagon consisted of parties boycotting the elections.

Other parties in the Octagon include Freedom Square, European Georgia, United National Movement, Strategy Agmashenebeli, Ahali, Girchi – More Freedom, Droa, and Federalists.

Bokeria said the Federalists’ priority remained the 13 September protest and the broader expansion of the movement, aimed at challenging the Georgian Dream government.
