Georgian FM discusses country’s implementation of EU candidacy conditions with commissioner Varhelyi

Georgian foreign minister Ilia Darchaishvili on Tuesday met with Oliver Varhelyi, the European Union commissioner for neighbourhood and enlargement, to review his country’s implementation of the 12-point conditions outlined  by the bloc in June 2022 to grant Georgia its membership candidate status later this year. 

 

“The Minister thanked the European Commissioner for his active support of Georgia in the process of joining the EU. The meeting touched on the reform agenda of Georgia on this path, in particular, special attention has been made on the implementation process of 12 recommendations of the European Commission, which is successfully omgoing”, the Georgian foreign office said. 

 

While in Brussels, the FM is scheduled to meet with Josep Borrell, the Vice-President of the European Commission and the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, and the EU commissioners for enlargement, justice and home affairs. 

 

Vakhtang Makharoblishvili, the Georgian representative to the EU, on Tuesday described the planned meetings as “very important” ahead of the EU Commission’s interim report in a few months and its recommendations in October whether to grant Georgia the bloc’s membership candidate status.
