The Foreign Ministry expressed hope that recent developments in Venezuela could lead to the reversal of that decision, in accordance with Georgia’s national interests and the principles of international law.

The Georgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday said it is “closely following” ongoing developments in Venezuela, expressing hope that future processes in the country will unfold in line with the “best interests” of the Venezuelan people.

In a statement, the Ministry recalled that Venezuelan authorities had previously recognised Georgia’s Russian-occupied regions of Abkhazia and the so-called South Ossetia as independent states, a move Tbilisi described as a “gross violation” of international law.

“We are closely following developments in Venezuela with the hope that future processes will unfold in line with the best interests of the Venezuelan people. Given that the Venezuelan authorities recognised Georgia’s occupied regions, Abkhazia and the so-called South Ossetia, as independent states in gross violation of international law, we express hope that recent developments will lead to the reversal of this unlawful decision, in line with Georgia’s national interests and international legal principles,” the Ministry said.
