Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia Ilia II has issued a congratulatory message marking both the anniversary of the European Union’s founding and the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day.
In the statement released by the Georgian Orthodox Church, the Patriarch extends congratulations to EU member and candidate countries on the historic milestone of European unity, and to all people—especially veterans—on the occasion of the victory over fascism.
“Congratulations to all on the 80th anniversary of the victory over fascism. This day embodies countless examples of heroism and perseverance shown by many during the Second World War. It was this dedication, along with divine help, that enabled the joint victory over evil and gave this day its special significance,” the statement reads.
The Patriarch emphasized the high price of victory, noting that cities, villages, churches, historical monuments, and works of art were destroyed, and more than 61 million lives were lost, including over 300,000 Georgian soldiers.
“At a time when the world faces numerous complex challenges, the enormous sacrifices made 80 years ago should serve as a reminder to all of the vital importance of peace—so that the painful lessons of the past do not become even more tragic for humanity.”
He also highlighted the historical importance of May 9 for Europe: “Following World War II, peace was established and relations between nations entered a new stage. The European Union, aimed at ensuring lasting peace, was founded on this very day in 1950.”
The message concludes with a biblical call for unity and peace: “Let us therefore pursue what makes for peace and for mutual upbuilding (Romans 14:19). May God bless Georgia and the entire world.”
