Georgian PM Irakli Garibashvili has stated that unlike other strains of coronavirus, the vaccine is ‘mostly ineffective’ in terms of the Omicron variant which is currently dominant in Georgia.

He stated that is why the government had made the decision to cancel green Covid passports ‘as it has lost its meaning.’

“Vaccinated individuals contract Omicron. For instance, I was fully vaccinated with Pfizer and had the strain anyway. The majority of Omicron cases reported in Georgia are mild. That is why we have changed the position to the green passes,” Garibashvili said.

However, he said that the government will continue offering incentives to the elderly population to get the Covid jab ‘to prevent complications in the risk group.’

1,233,566 have been fully vaccinated in Georgia since March 2021.
