First Vice-Speaker of the Georgian Parliament Gia Volski on Friday linked the resignation of US Ambassador to Georgia Robin Dunnigan to a possible disagreement with the policies of the new US administration under President Donald Trump.
Speaking to reporters, Volski claimed that early retirement was unusual for diplomats of Dunnigan's rank and experience, and implied that her decision to step down was reportedly politically motivated.
“Ambassadors do not usually retire early - this indicates that at least she herself does not agree with the policies pursued by the new US administration,” Volski said.
He went on to suggest that the resignation was preceded by what he described as “a certain violation of diplomatic ethics,” both in relation to Georgia and the incoming US government.
“It is unacceptable that the ambassador does not publish a clear statement, letter, or explanation to prevent speculation. This points to her disagreement with the direction the Trump administration is taking. Her resignation, of course, is related to this issue,” he added. “There is no other analysis or basis for this resignation.”
Dunnigan, who has served as US Ambassador to Georgia since October 2023, announced her decision to retire earlier this week. In her public statement, she emphasized that her departure was voluntary and that the US government had not requested her recall.
