Georgia’s Public Defender on Monday announced a full investigation into the death of a prisoner at the Vivamedi Tbilisi Clinic, amid questions surrounding the circumstances of the incident.
In a statement, the Public Defender’s Office said it would examine the causes of death and assess potential violations, following media reports about the inmate’s passing.
“The Public Defender’s Office will conduct a full investigation of the case in order to identify and assess the causes of death,” the statement read.
The case first came to public attention on 29 January, when it was revealed that the prisoner had been admitted to the clinic with serious injuries. In response, the Public Defender’s Office deployed a representative to the medical facility to verify the inmate’s condition and interview medical personnel.
Efforts were also made to gather information from fellow inmates and staff at the penitentiary facility from which the prisoner had been transferred. However, officials were unable to speak directly with the prisoner due to his medical condition at the time.
The office also reviewed medical records and available video footage. While video surveillance was present in parts of the facility, there was no coverage inside the prisoner’s cell. Medical documentation confirmed that the inmate had suffered multiple injuries, but the origin of those injuries remains unclear.
The Public Defender emphasized the need for a thorough investigation and forensic medical examination to provide answers.
“The Public Defender’s Office, within its authority, will continue to fully study the case and communicate with investigative agencies in order to monitor the investigation,” the statement concluded.
