German Foreign Minister suggests halting Georgia’s EU membership process

Germany’s Foreign Minister, Annalena Baerbock, has expressed her opinion that the process of Georgia’s accession to the European Union should be paused.

According to Baerbock, Georgia’s ruling party, Georgian Dream, has effectively stalled the integration process through its anti-European pivot. Representing the Green Party, she suggested that the EU formally considered halting Georgia’s membership process.

Baerbock also noted that decades of strong relations between Germany and Georgia have been significantly damaged.

German media reports highlight Baerbock’s criticism of Georgia’s pro-Russian government, citing the excessive use of force against protesters during demonstrations.

Since the Georgian government announced in November that it would not prioritize opening EU membership negotiations until the end of 2028, pro-European protests have continued across Georgian cities. These demonstrations have been marked by police violence, with dozens of protesters detained.
