Georgia’s transformation began when the introduction of unified national exams ended the era of privilege in university admissions, opposition figure and former official under the United National Movement government, Gigi Ugulava, said on Friday.
His remarks come as Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze announced upcoming reforms in Georgia’s educational processes the previous day.
Writing on social media, Ugulava recalled that the “real Rose Revolution [in 2003]” occurred when “three MPs’ children failed to enter university, while the best result came from a student raised in the village of Oni.”
He said that this moment marked a turning point that led Georgia’s education system to join the Bologna Process, aligning it with European standards.
“This generation is now fighting against the Soviet-style elite - the spoiled heirs of the ‘workshop bosses’,” Ugulava wrote, adding that “never before has the contrast between knowledge and ignorance, light and darkness, been so stark - and darkness will surely be defeated.”
