Georgian ruling party MP Giorgi Chakvetadze has accused French President Emmanuel Macron of “double standards” over protests in France and Georgia, pointing to a contrast between Macron’s response to demonstrations in France and his criticism of the Georgian government’s handling of anti-government protests.
In a social media post on Monday commenting on the protests in France, Chakvetadze wrote that Macron had condemned the demonstrations and responded by banning public gatherings altogether.
Chakvetadze, first deputy chair of the Georgian parliament’s Education, Science and Youth Affairs Committee, also claimed that Georgia had faced five attempts to stage a revolution since 2020, referring to Macron’s statement of 13 December 2024.
He further referred to the events of 4 October 2025, criticising the “encouragement of an attempt to overthrow the government under the guise of a peaceful protest, the storming of the presidential palace in Tbilisi and the subsequent failure to condemn the incident”.
“Violence is a crime even when committed in the name of democracy - in Tbilisi, Paris and Antananarivo,” Chakvetadze wrote.
