Tbilisi mayor Kakha Kaladze on Wednesday said the authorities carried “no responsibility” for the elevators’ maintenance in the capital, following a deadly incident in the outskirts of Tbilisi last week, killing two in an elevator accident.

He said the flat owners’ cooperatives were responsible for regular checks of elevators and necessary maintenance work, noting “considering socio economic situation in the country”, the City Hall was co-funding relevant projects.

“Tbilisi Municipality annually spends up to 40 million GEL on the co-financing program of apartment owners’ cooperatives”, said the official.

In order to benefit from the co-financing programme, Kaladze said it was necessary for the cooperatives to carry out an examination of the technical condition of the elevator and identify whether it had any defects.

The following step covered the registration of the elevator in the facility register of the Technical and Construction Supervision Agency, and in the case the elevator needed any repairs, the local government would provide a certain portion of  funds.
