Govt plans to increase funding for defence, law enforcement agencies

The government of Georgia has plans to increase funding for Defence and Interior Ministries, as well as for the State Security Service by 2022, to boost the country’s defence and security capabilities.

 

Per the 2022 state budget draft, the funding of Defence Ministry will increase to 918 mln GEL up from 900 mln,  Interior Ministry – 800 mln GEL up from 790 mln, State Security Service – 140mln GEL up from 137mlnGEL compared to 2021.

 

Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Defense and Security Irakli Beraia from the ruling Georgian Dream party stated earlier today that the increase in funding  of the Defense Ministry ‘is vital’ to ensure the compliance of the country’s armed forces with NATO standards.

 

The committee members said that the increased budget will allow the law enforcement agencies to cope with existing security threats.
