UN Secretary-General António Guterres has warned that the world is on the verge of a broader war that could have global consequences if fighting in the Middle East is not halted.
Guterres said the conflict, now entering its second month, has led to rising casualties, widespread destruction and increasing attacks on civilians and infrastructure.
“We are on the brink of a wider war that could engulf the entire Middle East and bring dramatic consequences for the whole world,” he said.
He warned that the crisis is already extending beyond the region, pointing to the impact of disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, where any closure would hit vulnerable countries hardest. Nations such as the Philippines, Sri Lanka and Mozambique are already feeling the effects through rising food and fuel prices.
The UN chief called on all parties to take the following steps: the United States and Israel to halt military actions, Iran to stop attacks on neighbouring states and all sides to respect sovereignty, protect civilians and critical infrastructure, including nuclear facilities and ensure freedom of navigation.
Guterres added that diplomatic efforts are ongoing, with his personal envoy Jean Arnault travelling to the region.
“Conflicts do not end by themselves. They end when leaders choose dialogue over destruction. That choice still exists and it must be made now,” he said.
