Iago Khvichia, leader of the Girchi party, on Tuesday criticized the ruling Georgian Dream party for allegedly aligning with Russian interests regarding the investigation into the August 2008 war.

Georgia’s ruling party on Tuesday accused former President Mikheil Saakashvili of “deliberately provoking” the August 2008 war with Russia as part of a “well-planned and externally orchestrated betrayal”, rather than a result of spontaneous actions or “mental instability”.

“The Georgian Dream party’s stance suggests that Russia had legitimacy in its actions, and we need to investigate why Saakashvili’s actions made Russia seem justified. It is essential for the Georgian people to reconsider their electoral choices and avoid electing individuals who prioritize narrow party interests over the national interest”, Khvicha said.

He also condemned attempts to “flirt” with the Russian government, implying such actions undermined Georgia’s sovereignty.
