The imprisoned former president of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili on Wednesday responded to debates in the European Parliament on Tuesday and thanked the body for “solidarity”.

“Thanks to the European Parliament for its solidarity. Indeed, all masks have been removed – we are dealing with a machine of lies and violence that works for Russia,” Saakashvili said in his social media post, in reference to the current Georgian Dream government.

Several MEPs slammed the Georgian authorities in their address during the debate and once again called for Saakashvili’s release on health grounds.

In his comments last week, prime minister Irakli Garibashvili cited Saakashvili as the “EP’s agent” and accused the body of doing “everything” to facilitate the third president’s “unlawful release” from custody.
