Heavy and intense rainfall over recent days has damaged road and sports infrastructure in several districts of Tbilisi, City Hall said on Monday.

Authorities said landslides, collapsing retaining walls, fallen lighting poles and uprooted trees were reported in the districts of Gldani, Krtsanisi, Vake, Chughureti and Isani.

The Tbilisi mayor’s office said the most serious damage was recorded in Gldani after the Gldanula River overflowed, triggering landslides on Andronikashvili, Tskaro and Tamar Mepe streets.

A sports ground was damaged and a lighting pole was swept away by the river, while a gas pipeline on Tamar Mepe Street was also damaged. Restoration works on the pipeline have already begun, the statement said.

Several homes in the Mukhiani cottage area were flooded because of the severe weather.

Local authorities offered temporary accommodation to three families living on Tsulukidze Street in the Isani district and to one resident of Mukhura Street in Gldani whose home was significantly damaged.

Emergency management teams, district officials and representatives of Tbilisi City Hall were deployed to affected areas, where damage assessments and infrastructure repair works are continuing.
