Georgia’s Special Investigation Service has launched a probe into the reported assault on a TV Pirveli film crew.
The investigation is being conducted under Article 154 of the Criminal Code, which pertains to the unlawful obstruction of a journalist's professional activity. The offense is punishable by a fine, community service ranging from 120 to 140 hours, correctional labor for up to two years, or house arrest for six months to two years.
According to TV Pirveli’s head of news, Nodar Meladze, the incident took place near the residence of Giorgi Shinjikashvili, the recently resigned deputy governor of Georgia’s Kvemo Kartli region. Meladze claims that Shinjikashvili’s father physically assaulted reporter Mariam Makasarashvili, confiscated her phone, and seized the crew’s television camera.
“This is absolute lawlessness in the country,” Meladze wrote, describing the attack and calling for accountability.
