Irakli Kadagishvili, chair of the Parliament’s Committee on Local Self-Government, has criticized what he describes as the European Union’s current “mainstream” approach to democracy.
Kadagishvili on Wednesday argued that the EU prioritizes compliant governments over genuine democratic practices.
“If a government is obedient and implements their agenda, everything is ‘ideal’ for them-including media coverage. They have long promoted the idea that ‘news is made here,’ even if five TV channels echo the same voice. This is their version of democracy,” he said.
He added that true democracy required tolerance for differing opinions, whereas “pseudo-democracy” cannot accommodate dissent. Kadagishvili warned that such approaches could lead to restrictions on media and free thought, likening the situation to “a wolf in sheep’s clothing.”
