Ruling party MP expects Borashvili to be effective as new security chief

Georgia’s parliamentary majority leader Irakli Kirtskhalia has expressed confidence that Tamaz Borashvili will be an effective head of the State Security Service, highlighting his 21 years of experience in the country’s security structures.

The MP stressed Borashvili was a “professional in his field” and described his appointment as an unprecedented development in Georgia’s recent history, given his long service in the security sector.

“We supported Tamaz Borashvili, a professional in his field. This is truly an unprecedented case in recent history, when a person with 21 years of experience in this service will lead a security institution,” Kirtskhalia said.

He congratulated Borashvili on his appointment and wished him success, adding that he was confident his work would be “very effective”.

Parliament approved Borashvili as the new head of the State Security Service on Wednesday, with 83 MPs voting in favour and none against.

Borashvili was nominated by Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze after Geka Geladze stepped down as security service chief on 14 September.
