Senior ruling party lawmaker Irakli Kirtskhalia has said that Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze's annual parliamentary address demonstrated Georgia's success in maintaining peace, stability, economic growth and national sovereignty amid a challenging geopolitical environment.
Speaking after Kobakhidze presented his annual report to Parliament on Friday, Kirtskhalia, who also chairs the parliamentary faction of the ruling Georgian Dream party, said the government's most important achievement has been preserving peace in a region marked by conflict and instability.
“Today’s report once again showed the main thing - that Georgia, despite an extremely difficult geopolitical environment, continues to maintain peace, stability, economic development and state dignity,” Kirtskhalia said.
He claimed the significance of these achievements is sometimes overshadowed by daily political disputes, despite their long-term importance for the country.
Kirtskhalia argued that Georgia is operating in an international environment characterized by war, heightened geopolitical tensions, pressure on smaller states and what he described as double standards in international relations.
“In such circumstances, Georgia's main task is not to become part of someone else's political experiment, but to protect its people, its sovereignty, its statehood and its future,” he said.
The parliamentary majority leader described the preservation of peace as the key political conclusion of the prime minister's report and credited Bidzina Ivanishvili, the party founder and honorary chair, with establishing the policy framework that the current government continues to follow.
“This did not happen by chance. It is the result of the peace policy founded by Bidzina Ivanishvili and consistently continued by the government today,” Kirtskhalia added.
He said the government's approach has focused on avoiding what he characterized as risky political decisions while prioritizing stability and national interests.
Kirtskhalia also reiterated the ruling party's support for Georgia's European aspirations while criticizing what he described as unfair treatment from some European institutions.
“Georgia's European choice is our historical, civilizational and political choice,” he said. “However, the European choice does not mean surrendering our dignity.”
According to Kirtskhalia, some elements of the European bureaucracy have failed to treat Georgia with sufficient fairness and respect, particularly when assessing the country's reforms and democratic progress.
“When a country is asked for loyalty but is not given a fair assessment, and when the European aspirations of its people are used as a tool of political pressure, a national government must respond openly, with dignity and principle,” he said.
The lawmaker stressed that Georgia seeks European integration as an equal partner rather than as a state expected to follow external instructions unconditionally.
Kirtskhalia further argued that Georgia has distinguished itself from many countries in the region by maintaining political and economic stability despite ongoing conflicts and security challenges.
“Against the backdrop of war, confrontation, security risks, energy challenges and geopolitical polarization, Georgia has become an island of stability,” he said.
He pointed to economic growth, tourism development, infrastructure projects and social programs as examples of the benefits of the government's policies.
The parliamentary majority leader also reaffirmed support for Georgia's territorial integrity, saying the government remains committed to the peaceful restoration of control over Abkhazia and Tskhinvali through diplomatic, legal and political means.
