Georgian PM honours Shindisi heroes, accuses critics of double standards over Russia

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze has paid tribute to the 17 Georgian soldiers killed in the Battle of Shindisi in 2008, saying their heroism should serve as an example for future generations.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Kobakhidze said the soldiers' sacrifice was "truly outstanding and exceptional" and thanked their parents and families for raising the servicemen who became national heroes.

"Their heroism is immortal and will remain an example in our country," Kobakhidze said.

Kobakhidze also accused politicians and cultural figures of applying double standards in their attitudes towards Russia.

Responding to a question about a statement by conductor and composer Nikoloz Rachveli, the prime minister said it was impossible, in his view, for someone not to be "Russophobic" in 2009-2010 and to become so after 2022.

He described this as a matter of "simple facts" that, he said, could not be explained, and accused critics of making "rough and insulting statements" because they were unable to justify their positions.

The Battle of Shindisi took place on August 11, 2008, during the Russia-Georgia war. Seventeen Georgian soldiers from the Second Infantry Brigade were killed in the fighting.
