Some people see corruption as ‘organic’, fail to understand public anger, PM Kobakhidze

There are people for whom corruption appears to be “organic”, and who fail to understand why the public, including members of their own political team, could be angry with a former team leader over his involvement in corruption, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze told journalists.

He said the country had faced numerous problems, including serious corruption-related issues, and that none of them could be covered up through what he described as “false campaigns.”

“It is very unfortunate when such developments take place in our country. There were numerous problems, and no one can cover them up with false campaigns. There were serious problems related to corruption,” Kobakhidze said.

“There are people for whom corruption apparently comes naturally, and they simply do not understand why people, including their own team, could be angry with a particular person - a former leader of the team - because he was involved in corruption,” he added.

“There are people who simply do not understand that corruption is wrong, or why someone might be angry with you - whether the public or your team - because you were involved in corruption. That is their matter. Our responsibility is to ensure that the law is enforced in every case,” Kobakhidze said.
