Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Friday said it was “unacceptable” to present the public with what he described as an ultimatum between traditional values and European integration.
“For us, of course, such ultimatums are unacceptable - when you are placed between traditional values, family values, and the interests of minors on one side, and European integration on the other [...] We do not think such dilemmas should be presented to our society - to say they must either give up European integration or give up traditional values. This is neither a correct nor a healthy dilemma,” Kobakhidze told journalists.
Responding to a question about an initiative to hold a plebiscite on repealing laws on family values and transparency, proposed by United Neutral Georgia movement, Kobakhidze said public opinion could generally be sought on any issue but refrained from giving a position on this specific proposal.
The Prime Minister defended existing legislation on family values and transparency, describing it as effective in preventing risks.
“We see heavy trends worldwide, including the negative impact of propaganda on statistics. We need prevention for our country and society, and that was the purpose of adopting these laws”, Kobakhidze said.
“If these laws are not relevant, then why are there such concerns about their adoption? In reality, these laws are effective and ensure risk prevention, which is exactly why the forces and individuals engaged in harmful propaganda - both in Georgia and abroad - are so concerned. These laws must remain in force”, he added.
