PM Kobakhidze discusses Georgia-UN cooperation with Guterres

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze met UN Secretary-General António Guterres in New York, with discussions focusing on Georgia-UN cooperation, the UN’s role in Georgia’s conflict-resolution process and opportunities to strengthen the partnership, the government press office said on Thursday.

“Pleased to meet with UN Secretary-General António Guterres. We discussed Georgia-UN cooperation, the UN’s role in Georgia’s conflict resolution process, and opportunities to strengthen our partnership,” Kobakhidze wrote on X.

Kobakhidze is in New York for the 81st session of the UN General Assembly and is scheduled to address the General Debate later today.

Levan Zhorzholiani, head of the Georgian government administration, said Kobakhidze’s address will focus on Georgia’s ongoing occupation, which the government considers the country’s main security challenge.

Zhorzholiani said the prime minister would underline the importance of diplomacy and reconciliation and Georgia’s stated commitment to restoring the country’s territorial integrity through peaceful means.

Kobakhidze is also expected to discuss Georgia’s economic performance over the past five years and strategic projects aimed at strengthening the country’s connectivity. He will also address international cooperation, with Zhorzholiani saying Georgia is prepared to work with all partners on the basis of equality and respect for sovereignty.
