Georgia and Azerbaijan sign energy and transport agreements after Kobakhidze-Aliyev meeting

The Georgian side also confirmed its readiness to host the commission’s next session in the near future

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze has met Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in Azerbaijan, with the two sides discussing strategic partnership, regional security and economic cooperation.
The meeting focused on further deepening ties between Georgia and Azerbaijan across multiple sectors, including trade, energy, transport and regional connectivity, the Government of Georgia press office said on Monday.
Both leaders highlighted “positive dynamics” in bilateral trade and economic relations and discussed the role of the intergovernmental economic cooperation commission. The Georgian side also confirmed its readiness to host the commission’s next session in the near future.
Kobakhidze and Aliyev also exchanged views on regional and global geopolitical challenges, stressing the importance of peace for the stable and sustainable development of the South Caucasus region.
The talks additionally covered joint regional infrastructure and connectivity projects implemented by the two countries.
Following the meeting, Georgia and Azerbaijan signed a package of agreements in the energy and transport sectors.
The documents included a 20-year intergovernmental agreement regulating the main conditions for electricity supply and transit between the two countries, as well as a 20-year extension of a 2003 agreement on Azerbaijani gas sales to Georgia aimed at ensuring the security of social gas supply.
The agreements were signed on behalf of Georgia by Economy Minister Mariam Kvrivishvili and on behalf of Azerbaijan by Economy Minister Mikayil Jabbarov and Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov.
The two sides also signed a protocol of the bilateral coordination council confirming that the new section of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway would enter full operation.
The protocol was signed by Kvrivishvili and Azerbaijani Minister of Digital Development and Transport Rashad Nabiyev.
Under the agreement, daily passenger rail services between Tbilisi and Baku will resume from 26 May after a six-year suspension.
Kobakhidze and Aliyev attended the signing ceremony following their meeting.
